Do you have what it takes to succeed as an online student? Here are some tips for success. >>
Online learning provides benefits and presents challenges.
The benefits include the flexibility to access course content when and where you want, the ability to take your time and participate in discussions thoughtfully, and the opportunity to increase technical skills.
On the other hand, as an online student, you may be challenged to stay organized and motivated without weekly class meetings and to build relationships with your instructor and classmates.
Here are several tips to help you succeed in an online learning environment.
Become familiar with Blackboard and the online structure of each class as soon as possible. Make sure you have any software and plug-ins you need at the beginning of the semester. Use the resources in the Tech Support section if you have questions, and let your instructor know if you can't resolve problems.
When you're learning at a distance, your instructor can't see a puzzled look on your face. If you don't understand an assignment or course content, ask about it. It will benefit you and your classmates as well - you can bet that if something is unclear to you, another student is wondering about it, too.
Answer discussion questions, offer feedback, ask questions, complete assignments. The success of an online class rests as much with the students as the instructor. Each student brings experience and expertise to the class that enriches the experience of others.
Be consistent in logging into the class so that you can check the announcements and see what your classmates are saying in discussions. Checking the conversation a few times a week will help you stay motivated and feel connected to the class.
In the online portions of your courses, your thoughts will be expressed through writing. Review what you have written to make sure your ideas are clearly and concisely expressed. Make sure to leave sufficient time to edit your work before submitting it.
Typically, online coursework requires at least as much time as a face-to-face class. Remember that your online work is the equivalent of class time and homework. It may help you to set aside specific times to complete assignments. Try not to leave work until the last minute.
Without the visual cues and body language of face-to-face communication, it's easier for negative comments and sarcasm to be misunderstood in online communication. Follow the common rules of "netiquette" in your online communication.
